Thank you to everyone who made our Annual Higher Education and Research Leadership Summit a smashing success. Attendees welcomed the opportunity to learn from the Presidents and Institutions that are members of the Monterey County Business Council’s Higher Education and Research Competitive Cluster to about their upcoming collaborations and projects as well as the economic impact of Education and Research in the Monterey Bay region. Once again, attendees received insights from, and enjoyed the opportunity to network with, leading officials from Cal State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB), University of California Santa Cruz, Monterey Peninsula College, Hartnell College, Monterey College of Law, the Naval Postgraduate School, and others.
A focus of this year’s Summit was the Bright Futures Cradle-to-Career initiative in which regional partners are working together to ensure that every child is prepared for school, succeeds in and out of the classroom, completes a post-high school credential and enters a promising career. A video regarding this important community effort, as well as important information and data, are now online. We thank, among others, CSUMB President Eduardo Ochoa, Hartnell College President Willard Lewallen, Monterey Peninsula College Walter Tribley, CSUMB Provost Bonnie Irwin, Cynthia Holmsky, Director of The Bright Futures Education Partnership for Monterey County, and Dr. Romero Jalomo, Hartnell College Vice-President of Student Affairs, for educating our community about this crucial endeavor. Thanks also to the Monterey Herald for their coverage of the Summit.
We were also very fortunate to have the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) President, Vice Admiral (Ret.) Ronald A. Route, speak about the role NPS plays in protecting our nation and for introducing Dr. Ray Buettner, Director of both the Joint Interagency Field Experimentation (JIFX), and Consortium for Robotics and Unmanned Systems Education and Research (CRUSER). Dr. Buettner’s presentation, Research Highlights from NPS: “Here Come the Drones!”, was a highlight of the Summit and videos of the JIFX and CRUSER work are online.
