We are excited to welcome Monterey County District Attorney Dean Flippo to Monterey County Business Council’s Monthly Members Only Luncheon. Mr. Flippo has served as District Attorney since 1972 and has a wealth of experience, and a stellar conviction record as D.A. We have asked him to discuss some of the noteworthy Monterey County cases he has tried over the decades.

We will also continue our tradition of offering flu shots through MCBC member, Central Coast Visiting Nurses Association. Fee for the flu shot is $ 30.  Medicare Part B is accepted.  There are many reasons to get a flu shot every year.  Download the documents below to learn why:

About DEAN D. FLIPPO District Attorney, County of Monterey

Dean D. Flippo serves as the Chief Public Prosecutor whose responsibility it is to conduct all prosecutions on behalf of the People. Mr. Flippo administers a staff of approximately 150 in three branches located throughout the County.

Mr. Flippo is a graduate of the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, having received his B.A. in 1963. Mr. Flippo also graduated from Wayne State University Law School and received his Juris Doctorate in 1966.

Mr. Flippo began his career in law in the United States Army in 1967 where he served as a Chief Prosecutor, Post Judge Advocate, and Military Judge, and was the recipient of the Army Meritorious Service Medal. He later served as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Genesse County, Flint, Michigan, where he headed a strike force against public corruption and organized crime.

Mr. Flippo began a distinguished career as a Prosecutor in Monterey County in 1972, where he served as the Assistant District Attorney. In 1990, Mr. Flippo was elected District Attorney by an overwhelming margin. During his administration, Mr. Flippo established many innovative programs: a Juvenile and Adult Gang Prosecution Unit, Domestic Violence Prosecution Program, Child Abduction Unit, Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit, Health Annuities Fraud Unit, Workers’ Compensation Fraud Unit, Child Assault Victim Multi-Disciplinary Interview Team, Sexual Assault Response Team, Auto Fraud Unit, Restitution Case Disposition Unit, Bilingual Special Emphasis Victim Unit, and a State Prison Prosecution Unit.

Additionally, Mr. Flippo established a Truancy Abatement Unit which has received statewide recognition for their success in working closely with schools and families to bring about compliance with mandatory school attendance laws.
From 1991 until July 2001, under the leadership of Mr. Flippo, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Family Support Division became one of California’s most productive and innovative counties in child support enforcement. In 1999, he was recognized as the Outstanding Manager of the Year by the National Child Support Enforcement Association.

Mr. Flippo is a past President of the California District Attorneys Association (CDAA) and is a past member of the Board of Directors of the National Child Support Enforcement Association. He is the State Chair for the CDAA Consumer Protection Committee and a Board Member of the National District Attorney’s Association. Locally, he is a member of the Boards of Directors for many organizations to include the Monterey Peninsula College Foundation and Monterey Peninsula Foundation Grant Committee, and chairs several committees: the Child Abuse Prevention Council; Children’s Council of Monterey County; Community Alliance for Safety and Peace; Honorary Advisory Board Member Community Partnership for Youth; Monterey County Joint Gang Task Force; Tri-County Real Estate Fraud Advisory Team (REFAT), Crime Victims Bureau; and the Advisory Committee for Fight Crime: Invest in Kids.

Mr. Flippo was a faculty member for over 25 years at Golden Gate University and Monterey Peninsula College. He has instructed graduate and undergraduate courses in Public Administration, Administration of Justice, American History and American Government. Additionally, he serves as a volunteer for many community organizations, including the Kiwanis Club of Monterey, the American Cancer Society Monterey County Leadership Council, Monterey Peninsula Youth Foundation, and as legal counsel for the Monterey County Peace Officers Association.

In 2015, Mr. Flippo began an unprecedented seventh term. He is the longest-serving District Attorney for the County of Monterey.
